In the time of Saul the first king of Israel some of the most capable and gifted men in the entire nation of Israel gathered around Saul and joined his army. In Chapter 14:52 it is recorded,
‘….when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself”.
Saul however found himself on the horns of a dilemma. According to chapter 13:19 it is recorded,
‘Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears. But every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his mattock, his axe, or his sickle’.
To get straight to the point…the Philistines had killed off all the Blacksmiths; the individuals tasked with outfitting the nation with weapons of war and instruments of harvest. In fact when Goliath challenged the armies of Israel, there were only two swords in Israel…one on Saul and the other on Jonathan. Saul’s dilemma was to be surrounded by the best men in the land, capable, willing, and spoiling for fight but severely ill-equipped and lacking the tools they needed to successfully do their job.
